There is growing evidence that the current Medicaid policy surrounding tubal sterilization does not support patient comprehension, making it difficult for
patients to make informed decisions. Our research team, in collaboration with Dr. Sonya Borrero at the University of Pittsburgh, developed and tested MyDecision/MiDecisión. It is a patient-centered, web-based decision aid to facilitate informed and value-concordant decision-making among Medicaid enrollees considering tubal sterilization for permanent contraception. It was developed through a stakeholder-engaged process described here.
We tested the decision aid through a multi-site randomized controlled trial in Pittsburgh, PA, Knoxville TN, and San Francisco. Data collection for this
randomized clinical trial has concluded. This decision aid significantly increases tubal sterilization knowledge and significantly decreases decision conflict.
