When it comes to choosing a birth control method, it can be challenging to figure out which method is best for you. My Birth Control is an online decision support tool designed to help people select contraceptive methods that are consistent with their values and preferences, as well as help providers be better able to support patient decision-making about contraception.

In 2016, PCRHP completed a randomized control trial evaluating the effect of My Birth Control in family planning clinics. The study found that the tool positively influenced patient experience of contraceptive counseling and decision-making, without increasing the time providers spend with patients.

Patients who used the tool

  • Reported a more positive experience of contraceptive counseling
  • Had more knowledge about their contraceptive options
  • Were more satisfied with information about side effects
  • Were better able to make informed decisions

Providers who participated in the study

  • Found interacting with patients who were more informed and engaged with the decision-making process provided greater satisfaction to them
  • Reported that incorporating My Birth Control into their counseling practice was acceptable and feasible
  • Described counseling as more efficient when patients use My Birth Control

Since this study, My Birth Control has also been adapted for choosing birth control immediately after having a baby and in the context of abortion care.

My Birth Control is available for use, and integration of the tool into care or services can be tailored to meet the needs of users and providers. Visit use.mybirthcontrol.org for access to the tool, as well as more information on the impact of the tool, how it works, and implementation resources to support those who are interested in incorporating My Birth Control into their practice.
